You Paid For It: Daycare Centers Overbilling State Government

ST. LOUIS, MO. (KTVI) – Daycare Centers in St. Charles County, St. Louis and elsewhere in the state overbilled Missouri taxpayers to the tune of nearly $300,000 for kids they weren’t even keeping.

One child had been gone from a daycare for nearly a year yet the daycare was still charging the state for his being there.

The Department of Social Services pays the daycare centers as part of a program to help the working poor with child care.

The interim Director blames a computer flaw for allowing the charges to go through without verifying the child was actually at the day care.

The problem came to light during an Audit by the State Auditor’s Office. Officials don’t know how long it had been going on.

Teey do say they could pursue criminal charges against some of the Daycare Centers if they determine that this is a case of intentional fraud.
