Social Media Helps St. Louisans Find Loved Ones In Boston Marathon Bombings

(KTVI) – One of the most frustrating and frightening challenges in the area around the marathon was simply finding the friends and family you came there with.  For Sarah Dexter of Wentzville, it proved to be gut wrenching.

She was watching the race not far from the finish line, waiting for her cousin to pass.  That’s when the bomb went off.  She saw several badly injured people, including little kids.

“It was horrible,” she told us via Skype Monday night.  “There was a lot of blood on the street. Shoes.  You could feel the heat from the impact.”

Next came the uncertainly; cell service was almost nonexistent, and she was trying to find her cousin amidst 25 thousand panicked runners and all those on the side of the course.  Another relative began running up Boylston Street in a desperate attempt to find her daughter.

Last Summer’s Drought Making Basements Leak

ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI)– Lots of rain in the forecast this week could force homeowners to deal with an expensive problem they never had before: wet basements.

The Missouri River level dropped so low last summer boats that had sunk years ago were exposed.

This week the water level is predicted to jump another nine feet, a few feet below flood stage.  We can use the rain but some homeowners want it all to go away.

Thomas Kirgin`s O`Fallon, Missouri home was built 12 years ago and in those dozen years his basement has always been dry, until now.

Companies like Helitech are super busy. They blame last summer`s drought.  The extreme heat and lack of rain turned lawns yellow and killed trees. And it dried out the clay soil.

Cracks form and then all the rain starts leaking through those cracks that homeowners never had until last summer.  That`s what happen to this house.

Tax Day is Here; Post Office Not Extending Hours This Year

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – If you haven’t sent in your taxes yet, Monday is the deadline.  And the United States Postal Service  has information you need to know if you’re waiting until the last minute to get that return in the mail.

Customers will be able to drop returns in the drive through area at the Main Post Office in Downtown St. Louis.  You’ll have until midnight to get the forms postmarked.

Postal service officials say they will not have employees on the streets in front of the Post Office to collect returns like they’ve done in past years.  Also, none of the offices in the St. Louis metro area will extend their retail hours on Tax Day.

If you’re mailing in your return and not e-filing, post officials are encouraging customers to get their returns in the mail early in the day.  Postal officials say if you need postage and mailing supplies, you can use the Downtown location until 8 p.m. Monday night.

O’Fallon Man Gets Home Confinement, Probation For Pointing Laser At Aircraft

OFALLON, MO — (KTVI) – A St. Charles County man will spend the next two months on home confinement and the next two years on probation.

Michael Brandon Smith, formerly of O’Fallon, Mo., was sentenced Thursday for pointing a laser at an aircraft.

Court documents state the incident happened around 10 p.m. May 18, 2012 while a St. Louis Metro Air Support helicopter was responding to a report of a burglary in progress near 200 Meriwether in St. Charles County.

When the beam hit the helicopter’s glass, the pilot couldn’t see and had to pull away from the scene.  Authorities later traced the source of the beam to the 2700 block of Red Cedar Parc Drive in O’Fallon. The pilot and a passenger saw Smith standing in his driveway with the laser. When police arrived, he was still holding the laser in his hand.
