Fox Files: Area Animal Shelter Euthanasia Rates

The Humane Society of MO Blames Others For Its Record.

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – Thousands of animals are euthanized every year, sometimes by the shelters you may least expect.  You may find some of their answers, more surprising.  Investigative reporter Chris Hayes explains how the discussion has begun a mini firestorm about whether some animals deserve saving.

Our investigation is based on numbers compiled every year by Operation Spot, a group that’s trying to compel people to spay and neuter their pets, by revealing how many animals we put down.

In 2011, shelters put down nearly 20,000 dogs and cats, just in the St. Louis area.  According to the numbers, some shelters euthanized more than half of the animals brought in.

Gov. Nixon Wants State Lawmakers To Restore Security Funding

ST. CHARLES, MO. (KTVI) – Missouri Governor Jay N0ixon says the Senior PGA event in St. Louis could be a possible target for terrorists.  Security funding cuts have the governor worried about protecting people.  Nixon mentioned the Boston bombings and how crucial federal homeland dollars were in catching the two suspects.  He said the bombings and the Texas fertilizer plant explosion are the kinds of disasters we must be prepared for in Missouri.

The governor made the comments before a State Emergency Management Agency Conference.  He also ripped into the Missouri senate for cutting federal homeland security funds from the state budget earlier this week.  Nixon said, “turning down 21 million dollars in federal money, quite frankly, makes absolutely no sense.  We have coming up here in St. Louis on May 23rd the Senior PGA tournament, another world wide event, that will be sent all across the world on TV and yet it’s another target.”

Ameren Helping Save Farmers’ Equipment From Flood Waters

ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI)– High water along the Mississippi has farmers looking for higher ground. The Mississippi River has, at least for the time being, stopped rising near west Alton.

The river leveled off Wednesday about 2-3 feet below the top of a levee which protects thousands of acres of farmland.

The original crest forecast called for the river to top this levee and flood much of northern St. Charles County.

That would have threatened more than just farmland, it would have left farmers scampering to find somewhere to put their expensive tractors, combines and other equipment.

That’s where the folks at Ameren Missouri enter the story.

Ameren’s Sioux Energy Center is located nearby on some of the highest land in the area.

St. Charles Man Charged In Death of Unborn Child

ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) – Prosecutors in St. Charles County say a St. Charles man is responsible for the death of an unborn child.

Paul Joseph Murphy, 52, was charged with First Degree Involuntary Manslaughter on Tuesday.  According to the indictment,  on March 16, 2013, Murphy was driving on the wrong side of the road on West Clay Street when he crashed head-on into another vehicle.

The mother, a male driver and a three-year-old child were all taken to an area hospital. The woman was 19 weeks pregnant and gave birth to a still born baby.

Authorities believe Murphy had taken a benzodiazpine, a drug used to treat conditions like anxiety and insomnia and that his driving was impaired by the medication.

Murphy is also charged with three counts of Second Degree Assault.  He could face up to 36 years in prison if convicted on all the charges.

Bond is set at $50,000.

Crews Hope Sandbags Protect Soccer Fields

ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) – Flood waters are causing all kinds of problems in St. Charles County. Among them is the threat of flooding at a popular soccer park off Highway 370 and New Town Boulevard called the St. Louis Youth Soccer Association.

There are 17 soccer fields there on the other side of a levee holding back rising flood waters from the Mississippi River and back up from Dardenne Creek.

Crews worked all weekend long to build up sandbags on top of the levee to give the soccer fields some additional protection.

The sandbags run nearly a mile around the levee.

As of Monday morning, the numbers looked promising for saving the fields.

The executive director of the association tells us the levee and the extra protection is good to 37 feet. The crest is projected to be 34.9 feet Tuesday.
