3 Chicks Hatch, 2 Eggs Remain At Peregrine FalconCam

The pair of peregrine falcons that are having their nesting activities shared with the world through a “FalconCam” at Ameren Missouri’s Sioux Energy Center in St. Louis recently hatched three chicks. Two eggs remain unhatched.

The FalconCam is a cooperative effort among the Missouri Department of Conservation, Ameren Missouri and the World Bird Sanctuary to help people discover nature through a bird’s-eye view of peregrine falcons raising chicks. A camera near the nest box provides video feeds to each organization’s website.

Watch the FalconCam at mdc.mo.gov/node/16934.

FOX Files: The Animal Business Part I

The animal business is a huge money maker in the Midwest and it's sometimes hidden.  We begin our special report with a story about what's sometimes called "captive hunting."

Some compare it to hunting at a place like Grant's Farm, a fenced preserve for wildlife, where the animals are not really wild.

As you're about to see, the animals are accustomed to people, because they grew up around humans who often feed the animals by hand.

Now imagine being able to pay to shoot these exotics.

African Wild Cat Is On The Loose In St. Charles County

A wild African cat is on the loose in a busy section of St. Charles County.  The cat, a serval, is a pet belonging to Nick Natoli of Defiance.  He says her name is Cleo and she ran off about seven weeks ago.  Friday she was spotted near Highway 94, and 911 calls were made saying a cheetah had been spotted.  She was located later in the day in a wooded area adjacent to the Target store at Mid Rivers Mall Drive and Highway 94.

“She got too spooked, Natoli said.  “There were people moving all around the woods and it really spooked her so she was moving pretty quick and didn’t want to stop for anything.”

Those people were members of his family as well as St. Charles County Animal Control, who had tranquilizer guns ready to try and catch the cat.  The concern wasn’t so much about the animal being a threat, but the difficulty in catching it.  Online articles say servals can run as fast as fifty miles per hour.
