Paws In The Park “Dog Festival”

The St. Charles County Parks Department will host its 8th Annual Paws in the Park celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Broemmelsiek Park, 1615 Schwede Rd., off of Highway DD (Winghaven Blvd.) in Wentzville.  This year’s event will be held inside the unique off-leash dog area of the park, which features a large pond for dogs to splash around and play in.  Pet lovers from across the region will attend this fun, free off-leash dog-festival packed with contests, prizes, sponsor giveaways, and K-9 and obedience skills demonstrations.

Beginning at 11 a.m., Ares, a specially trained dog from the St. Charles County Sheriff K-9 Unit, will conduct a drug search with a seized car, followed by a suspect tracking

exhibit in the park.  At noon, a local trainer from Helping Hounds Training will showcase her dogs with obedience and skills demonstrations.

Police Dogs Celebrate Graduation Day

Many of us have been attending graduations these past few weeks. But in St. Louis, there is one school where, instead of caps and gowns, graduates wear fur coats. Friday was graduation day for class # 204 from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police K-9 School. this is a school for dogs whose bite is worse than their bark.

"You have that emotional bond with it but he is also your police partner, they are willing to do what they can to help you," Officer Dan DeSpain said.

His new partner is Titan, a German Shepherd dog whose specialty is searching for narcotics. Lacy the Labrador is assigned to officer Vince Kleinigger, and you may be seeing them around.

"I am going to be assigned to Metrolink, we ride the train back and forth and we just go on calls for any suspicious packages or anything we check the platform to make sure everything is all right," Kleinigger said.

Blues Star Gives Assist In Animal Rescue

David Backes, and his wife Kelly, helped move dogs from a crowded no-kill shelter in Farmington, Missouri to a more spacious Humane Society in St. Charles. The St. Louis Blues Hockey Team may have the day off, but one of its players was hard at work helping abandoned dogs find a forever home.

This was not an easy or clean job, but husband and wife dug in with both hands and all their hearts. The dogs came from the Farmington Pet Adoption Center. The Backes family and staff from the St. Charles Humane Society helped move 31 dogs, including a mom and her pups.

Both facilities are no-kill shelters, but that is part of the problem. "Quite often, the employees will show up in the morning to work and there will be a bucket of puppies, or a dog tied to the gate," said Beth Hasse of the Farmington Pet Adoption Center.

FOLO: Alleged Puppy Mill Store Closed In St. Peters

A pet store near Mid Rivers Mall Drive in St. Peters ? and linked to an accused puppy mill ? is now closed. The store owners were kicked out after our recent investigation. The Puppy Expo looked like any other pet store, but customers didn't know the pups were trucked in every week from mid- Missouri. It was clear the owners didn't want anyone to know.

Breeder Herman Schindler hit our camera with his car when we traveled to Mexico, Missouri, to take a closer look at his operation. A March 2010 inspection report noted pages of violations ? some dogs covered in "fecal matter" and employees that had to care for about 100 dogs apiece.

We watched as they unloaded puppies by the armful, after driving them from Mexico, Missouri, to St. Peters. The property owner for the strip mall where Puppy Expo was located, was apparently watching our investigative report.

City Of St. Peters Searching For Buddy The Dog

The City of St. Peters is searching for the Utilities Department’s dog, Buddy, who disappeared the night of June 1, 2010. Buddy is an outside dog that acts as extra security at the Water Plant, and is well-loved as the Water Plant’s mascot and shared pet.

Buddy looks like a lab mix, but he is likely a Portuguese cattle dog. He has splotches of brown and black on his coat, and weighs about 80 pounds. (Attached photo was taken in 2007.)

Buddy is skittish during storms. Utilities employees believe he may have crawled under the Water Plant’s perimeter fence during a storm on the evening of Tuesday, June 1. The Water Plant is north of I-70 and east of Mid Rivers Mall Drive.

Various animal control departments in our area are aware that Buddy is missing. He wore an orange collar, a name tag and two rabies vaccination tags.
